The Literacy Intervention Programme is a one hour individualised programme that teaches spelling, reading and writing.
Using a phonics based programme to increase the children’s phonological awareness and knowledge, they are taught the 44 sounds of the English Language and the many different spelling choices.
Children learn the correct linguistic terms; a graph is one letter representing one sound, a digraph is 2 letters representing one sound such as “ai” in train and a trigraph is 3 letters representing one sound such as “igh” in light.
The children are taught to use their knowledge of sounds and the correct linguistic terms to sound out words in reading and spelling. Children are also taught to blend sounds, break longer words into syllables, to recognize prefixes and suffixes, to manipulate sounds in words and to build word families.
The programme is child centred taking into account the age, developmental stage and the interest of each child.
A multi-sensory approach is used incorporating the visual, auditory and kinaesthetic.
Explicit and direct instruction is used to teach the basic sub skills in reading, writing and spelling.
The programme includes plenty of hands on activities, games and computer software to reinforce concepts, improve motivation and make learning fun. Plenty of repetition and reinforcement of correct responses is offered and the child’s learning needs are continually assessed with praise every step of the way.
Children are given a home programme which is specifically written to reinforce the concepts and strategies taught during the lesson.
